Brighouse’s play is now almost 100 years old, but the warmth and strength of the main characters are timeless. In 1880s Lancashire, a patriarchal and distinctly grumpy boot shop owner is struggling with his feisty daughters. Fed up with holding the family business together, the eldest daughter, Maggie, takes the situation in hand to riotous effect.

| Her masterly of manoeuvring sends the plot and characters careering, to the consternation of all but herself. |

Her strident bossiness is saved from looking desperate by flashes of compassion and wit.

| It is a wonderful part, played to perfection by Judith Henderson. Her timid but talented husband (coerced!) is also subtly portrayed by Denis Bland, while Hugh Wright provides great comic timing and enjoyably pathetic arrogance, in his role as the boot shop owner, Henry Hobson. There are many lovely comic moments provided by the rest of the cast. The production, direction, lighting, sound, costumes etc. all have the ‘professionalism’ that we have come to expect from Grasmere Players. |
